Healthy Hobbies That Will Improve Your Life

Jessica Counti is an undergraduate social science student at the University of Western Ontario. She enjoys an array of different activities, part of which inspired her to write this blog about her favourite healthy and covid-friendly hobbies.

During these difficult times, it can be harder than ever to fill our time outside of school or work. Why not try out a new hobby or skill? Better yet, why not implement healthy habits and hobbies? There is something for everyone, from indoor activities to outdoor ones, here’s a list of some things you should try out while maintaining social distance!

1.) Walks / Hikes
One of my favourite things to do outdoors is going on a nice long walk or even a hike on my local trail system. It can be difficult being indoors all the time, so why not get a breath of fresh air, while also getting some exercise? Whether it is a walk around the block or through a nature trail, sometimes walks can be a great way to clear your head, and take in a moment to appreciate the outdoors.

2.) Yoga and Meditation
Yoga and meditation in quarantine are becoming more and more popular as people strive to find calm during these hectic times. Whether you already own a yoga mat or not, there are plenty of online classes and tutorials (on platforms such as Youtube and Instagram) that you can follow to suit your needs. Here are a couple of my favorite ones: 30 days of yoga, Power flow, and Morning Flow. There are also mindfulness and meditation apps such as Headspace and Calm, which lead you through a series of guided meditations. Trust me they are worth a trial!

3.) Cooking
Another indoors hobby that I have been really getting into is cooking and baking. I’m so over UberEats that I decided to level up their cooking skills. I am loving the experience so far, I get the freedom to create anything that I am craving with healthy ingredients. It’s such a rewarding experience, especially if you pair it with a fun playlist. At first I struggled to find good recipes to follow, and then I discovered Pinterest! I also like Instagram, Facebook for quick inspiration, but my go to is still Pinterest. I have created a board with some of my favorite recipes, check it out!

4.) Decluttering
Oh, you don’t understand how therapeutic this is! While people have been in quarantine, many are using this as an opportunity to declutter their spaces, since many of us are spending a lot more time at home. Why not take the time to find that lost bracelet that got stuck in the couch ages ago? With the rise in popularity, there are several resources that you can use if you want tips and tricks. Marie Kondo has released several books on the topic, as well as Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, founders of The Home Edit.

5.) Reading
Reading is one of my most enjoyable hobbies. In fact, it can be tied into any of the above activities, whether it’s a book on the practice of yoga, or the next new trendy recipe - you can literally never go wrong with reading! It’s my way of escaping the world for a bit, especially with the current stresses. Some of my all time favorites are: Atomic Habits, The Harry Potter Series and of course Michelle Obama’s Becoming.

So, what do you think? Which of these habits are you gonna take up first? I mean I don’t want to sway your decision or anything, but I do love a good pot of soup. Okay just kidding! It’s all up to you, pick the activity that brings you the most joy. Goodluck, you!
